What is a Keratin Hair Straightening Treatment? Keratin hair straightening is a smoothing process that infuses the vital element of keratin protein back into the hair cuticle. It infuses a blend of hydrolyzed keratin deep into the cuticle which is bonded and sealed with heat from a flat iron to relax the hair's subcuticle layer, resulting in renewed smoothness and shine.
Keratin is lost from constant damage and breakage from pollution, sun exposure, heat, styling, colouring, bleaching etc. The treatment restores and restructures the hair, preventing dryness, damage, and breakage. It relaxes and smooth’s dry, unruly, kinky curly, wavy hair eliminating the frizz factor and protects hair from humidity. Women worldwide find that even the most ‘hart to tame’ hair can be made smooth soft, silky straight and much more manageable, blow drying becomes faster and easier and daily styling time is significantly reduced.
How does keratin straightening differ from the dreaded Brazilian Permanent hair Straightening Treatment?
The Brazilian is more like a perm. The chemicals are similar but they rearrange the internal bonds and structure of the hair. It looks amazing at the start, but as the hair begins to grow out the previously straightened hair is straight while the new growth is curly, which can look awful. Keratin treatment straightens hair naturally and does not break hair bonds. So your hair tends to look normal even with regrowth because the solution is wearing off the whole head of hair at the same time as its more of a coating of the hair.

Downtime… how many days after the treatment before the hair is to be washed or gets wet?
The solution must stay in your hair for 72hours 3 days after the treatment to ensure the keratin protein bonds to your hair shaft. Avoid getting your hair wet, using styling products, hair ties or clips that may leave a ridge or kink, or excessive amounts of sweating during that time. If your hair does get kinked or wet, dry it off immediately and use a flat iron to reseal the cuticle.
What shampoo and conditioner should I use after the treatment?
To promote long lasting results and care for your keratin straightening treatment, it is recommended to use a sodium chloride and sulfate free shampoo and conditioner which is gentle and wont strip away the keratin as normal shampoo and conditioner do. Venus Beauty recommends ‘KERAfill’ Shampoo and Conditioner 280ml, which has been enriched with keratin and not only will it prolong the results of the keratin treatment, it will maintain your hair in tip top condition replenishing natural levels of amino acids and proteins to enhance shine and manageability. You will also find you will use less shampoo, conditioner and styling products saving you money.
Do I have my hair cut before or after the treatment?
It is recommended to have hair cut after the treatment, as hair will have a smoother texture and will lie differently.
Do I have a keratin treatment before or after I colour my hair?
For best results it is recommended you have a keratin hair straightening treatment after your hair is coloured. Or wait two weeks if colouring hair after the treatment. The treatment seals in the colour making it last longer and appear more vibrant. So… colour, keratin and then cut OR Keratin…wait two weeks then cut and colour.
Can the treatment be done on previously treated hair?
Yes. Keratin straightening treatment can be done on previously highlighted, bleached, coloured, chemically treated relaxed or permanently straightened hair. In fact keratin straightening treatment will work to repair damage caused by chemical treatments.
Can I style my hair as I normally do after the treatment?
Yes. In addition to being easier to maintain after the treatment, with considerably less drying time your hair will have the versatility to be styled curly, wavy or straight as desired, using all the styling products you would normally use.

How often can the treatment be done?
The treatment can be done as often as every 4-6 weeks
Can anyone have a keratin hair straightening treatment?
People with inflammatory scalp conditions such as psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis should consult their doctor before undergoing a keratin treatment.
Are maintenance treatments applied on the regrowth or the entire head?
Reapplications are done on the entire head of hair.
How long will the treatment last?
The results will usually last about 3 months, depending on the lifestyle and home care. Minimizing the hairs exposure to harsh chemicals such as chlorine in swimming pools and sodium/sulfate in the sea will help to prolong the effect. Hair that is particularly thick course or unruly often can but not always take several applications to tame the cuticle to achieve the desired texture within a 4-8 week period. Treatments must be done consistently in order to maintain the desired look. If treatments were to be discontinued the hair will return to its natural state.
